Architectural Project Competition
ThyssenKrupp House Berlin
A Meeting Point for People with Ideas
Decision: November 28, 2011
For its presence in the German capital, ThyssenKrupp AG is planning a new building in the very center of Berlin. Its design should reflect the Group and provide an inviting setting for people with ideas to encounter each other, a platform for innovation and technology, a venue for events and dialog.
The Humboldt Forum, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) housed in the former State Council building, and Schinkel’s Building Academy provide this neighborhood with the potential to attain a new, dynamic identity. Situated in stimulating proximity to numerous institutions and buildings of world renown, the Schlossplatz will constitute a distinctive new element within the urban fabric. With the "ThyssenKrupp House", the Group seeks to create, within this environment dedicated to research, science and the arts, a place that sets a standard and, with the architectural and technical design of the new building, lives up to it.
As the task is out of the ordinary and highly demanding, the competition was preceded by an international open application procedure so as to offer a maximum number of professionals the opportunity to put forward their candidature for taking up this challenge. 258 architecture firms from 19 countries have applied, 30 have been selected for participation. The prizewinners have now been selected in a two stage procedure and will be presented to the public in an exhibition early 2012.
